7 Tips For Ageing Well

7 Tips for Ageing Well

For most of us, ageing well means being able to continue to do the things we need and want to do. Here are some of our favourite tips for having a positive ageing experience.

1. Maintain a positive attitude

Studies tell us that the way we think about ageing has consequences for how we respond to difficult situations when we’re older. That affects our quality of life and may also have health ramifications. A positive attitude can have a world of benefits, including a better ability to cope with stress.

2. Watch what you eat and drink

Nutrition plays a major role in how your body ages. An ideal diet is low in saturated fat, with lots of fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, oily fish, and small amounts of low-fat dairy and lean meat.Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration, which can make you feel tired and confused. If you drink alcohol, keep at least two days per week booze-free to give your liver time to recover, and don’t exceed recommended daily limits for alcohol consumption.

3. Exercise regularly

Make sure you do at least 30 minutes of movement or exercise every day. Daily exercise will lower your risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even cancer. If that wasn’t enough, staying active can boost your self-esteem, improve your sleep, and give you more energy. Staying fit may also reduce age-related memory loss, according to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience.

4. Stay social

Friends and family are important factors in ageing well, making for good mental health and reduced risk of premature death. Nurture relationships with your loved ones, friends and neighbours. Stay involved with news and latest developments, engaging a positive community attitude.

5. Get enough sleep

Not sleeping enough may mean a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. During sleep, your body releases a growth hormone that helps restore collagen and elastin. Chronic lack of sleep adversely affects your brain’s function and speeds up the ageing process.

6. Get out in the sunshine – with sunscreen

Try to get outside in the sunshine for at least 15-20 minutes a day for a vitamin D boost. But make sure you wear sunscreen to avoid the harsh ageing effects of the sun on your skin.

 7. Get regular check ups

Visit your doctor regularly so that any health problems can be addressed early on. Get a seasonal flu vaccine and have your doctor check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
